Ok, not all days at kerrville are completely wonderful, some are occasionally boring, with moments of brilliance... Today was such a day...
Another 100+ degree scorcher.. Got a great amount of work done today, so that's a relief... (i know you're there nicole!!
) Good start to the day... 3 fresh loaves of honey raisin bread... the first one i open up is a killer... big, moist, chewy yet light.. tremendous... kudos to the CUSdoughboysandgirls.. But, a request from Camp Coho.... MORE RAISINS!!
Stopped for my typical midweek food trip.. 1 bar-Bee-Que chicken from HEB (first time i saw it i thought the store name was pronounced HEEB, but i figured that would be too politically incorrect
) a tub of cantaloupe, 1 banana (gotta stop finding that damn banana at 11pm at the bottom of the knapsack; Yeech!!),a gallon of water, and two bags of ice. got to the festival about 4:30 and registered for the women & men partnership seminar on thursday.. (gotta finish up most remaining work tonight and tomorrow) got to the threadgill theatre to catch the finish of the booking and management seminar, and introduced myself to Dick Renko the manager from trout fishing..
Aside to robby, Dick said "we've been talking about it for a few years. We'd love to if it can be arranged." he's waiting for you to get in touch.. i gave him your phone and email addresses. he's staying at the inn of the hills.. (830-895-5000.. go girl, go!!)
Went over to Camp Coho, empty, singkerrnicity, empty.. oh well... dinner by myself.. I ate with all the coho people last night, and was looking forward to it again tonight.. Finished dinner, and headed over to threadgill.. last night, i was a little late and got a sun seat.. tonight, i'm first in the house, and get my favorite spot in the raised deck, one of only 3 or 4 shade seats in the raised section.. Took out my festival copy of "Don't sweat the small stuff" and enjoyed seeing all of your signatures and dates.. If you haven't borrowed my copy, please remind me to bring it to susan moss's open house and "borrow" it for a short time.. or grab it at the july 4th party, and place your name appropriately.. (for more details, just ask)
The evenings entertainment was billed as Scandinavian song writers. There were 3 ladies and 1 man, all from Denmark. While they were certainly personable, and some of the guy's songs were humorous, it was just not up to snuff.. As a cultural exchange, and an expansion of the potential future audience it was worthwhile, but other than that, it was disappointing. I left the show at about 8:15 (it ran till 9), and headed over to coho, low on energy, and deciding on whether to head to the hotel real early and get some rest for tomorrow.. Arriving at camp coho, i'm greeted by a small crowd including jack hardy, crs (but very good), bill staines, gary/greg(?) crs (who only sings medieval tunes, very enjoyable), steve gillette, and... and... and... chuck pyle!! (maybe there is a god.... naaaaa..
) It's the first time i've been around a campfire with chuck, and although i just missed a song of his, and he only stayed for one more, it was keep it simple, and it was great!!! to my surprise, steve gillette and most of the others had not heard it. He did it slower than on the camel rock cd, and he's always adding stuff and changing it.. one of the other listeners commented that the song is always so different, he thought there were a couple of dozen different chuck pyles doing the song... Jack hardy was rocking, annie gallup came in and tossed out a couple of real gems, the crs crs guy did a song about living in ny city and having an apartment with EVERYTHING bolted down... even the coffee cup... gotta get his name tomorrow..
time warp... story from yesterday suppertime at camp coho... Buddy mondlock and carol elliot came into the camp (stop me if i told you this already!!) I walked over, and told him about how much i enjoy magnolia street and how much i enjoyed listening to it the other night at camp nashville.. I was just saying to myself during the song "where's the whistling?" (on the christine lavin compilation johnathan edwards does a killer harmony whistle along to buddy's lead).. He laughed and told me i should have joined in and whistled.. ME!!! ME!!! ME with the musical talent of a piece of chalk on a chalkboard... Damn.. I knew i should have practised with steve taylor (i told buddy that also
) oh well, just another close encounter of the third kind... dieties really abound here... we now return to our regular day 13 programming....
Anyway, Chuck had left, and, although the remaining players were kicking out great stuff, i decided it s/b an early evening for me so i can get the report out, get some more work done, get to sleep by 4, and still take care of that client at 10am..
tomorrow may be a dud, or a gigantic firecracker.. the two most prevalent rumors of the day were that Jackson browne is playing tomorrow night, either with, or separately from Joel Rafael. OR.... He cancelled...
As i said to the guy who told me that he heard from the office that he cancelled:
"Oh well, if that's the case then i guess we'll just be left with a typical wonderful year at kerrville, and it can't get any better than that".. It's jackson's loss, not ours... whatever will be...
Marie N. is due on the ranch tomorrow... she was blown away by chuck pyle's camel rock album... I'm hoping the two of them can cross paths while she's here...
The midweek activity (mon & tues) has been real lowkey.. Between the departees, and the exhaustion, critical mass is right on the edge...
Spent awhile at camp coho talking with michael terry, who's involved in both camp coho, and uncle calvin's coffeehouse in dallas. He's going on the cruise and hopes to be able to stay for part, if not all of the festival. I've already gotten feedback from 1 person who said she won't be camping but has offered her tent and 2 sleeping bags.. It would be nice if we can get a few more people to do the same before the weekend... I'd like to tell rod that we've gotten a few tents, etc for any cruisers who want to stay for the festival... I think he'd add it to his announcement... please let me know if you think you can toss in a tent, etc into the mix... Some of the other performers who are on the cruise may decide to stay at the festival, even if they're not performing.. (who wouldn't want to go to a WARM outdoor festival in january, since you're there already)
The performers on the cruise are: Trout fishing, sara hickman, david broza (i'll be speaking with him this weekend), carol elliot and buddy mondlock. No you can't go... you'll be too busy getting ready for the festival... I'll be too busy getting the "Official Unofficial broward folk club hospitality blanket" schtick set-up. And yes, i think we should have an open house the weekend after the festival at my place just the same way we did this year, and invite the festival.. I think that worked out great for membership and just plain fun last year...
that's it for now, unless i remember something else.. (not likely... right!!)
Ok steve apple, you can go to work now...
