Kerrville Ramblings - Day 14 Part 1

(Editors Note:If i ever get bored of uttering the phrase "another wonderful night at Kerrville", please kick me....)

Wow,

Another wonderful night at kerrville...

>From the beautiful tones of the Joel Rafael band (they're coming home with me).. to that damn steve seskin and his "don't laugh at me", to Nickie Lehman and His "There's no shoe my mouth won't fit".... the festival just grabs you and shouts "YOU CAN'T LEAVE YET!!!"... oof

Got to the festival about 5. Camp coho was preparing dinner, but i arrived with my standard mid-week fare of banana, canteloupe, and a bbq chicken. I stuck the chicken back in the icebox... They had great pasta and salad, and jack hardy invited me to join them... Bill hillman was the name i did not know from last night with the song about everything being bolted down... bill staines had survived his morning flying lesson and was joining in. Chris Baumann arrived today.

At the request of Peggy (so someone give her this answer). Camp Coho was named by Heidi Mueller and other seattle players who were here a number of years ago. They put out a cd of the songs played around the campfire to finance the next year's trip to the festival. Rod heard about it, and so was born the "camp nights" at the threadgill...

We're up to two donated tents for the kerrville cruisers/players who want to come to the festival. Anyone else ?? If i can find out early enough, i'll get the info to Rod Kennedy, and hopefully he'll add that to the announcement.

Tonight was "do something different night" for me.. After a wonderful show at threadgill with Suzanne Sherwin (nice, but too country) accompanied by michael johnson from monday nght, The joel rafael band played some beautiful peaceful melodious songs for the next hour..

RIght after the show finished, Nickie lehman told me they were going to have a set and open mic at the Kerrntry store in about 15 minutes. I had walked past one of these open mics earlier in the fetival... It was too.. too.. just too.. It takes some getting used to... The atmosphere can best be summarized as:

An ocean of noise in a sea of calm...

The opening set was for Chris Chandler, who was accompanied by Amanda(?) Freeman, and then nickie lehman. Let me tell you, i've seen chris with a number of performance partners, usually a new one each year... This is he first one who matches him in intensity, performance, and outrageousness.. A vamp to the nth degree, a modern incantation of the red hot mama, exuding sensuality, all these terms can be used to subscribe freeman, but none of them would do her true justice. She is a cross between the leading voice in the black choir, sophie tucker and mae west, all rolled into 1. She sings in alternating accompanyment to chandler, and has just blown away the crowd. Tonight she was more on (or more up) (or more imbibed) than i've seen her, and she just made you stop and catch your breath... I don't know if she has any recordings in this style, but if she does, she's also coming home with me..

One of chris's performances tonight, took on the term smart bomb... If it was so smart, it would tear the bad guys to pieces, and buy a beer for all the good guys within range... Maybe then it should be called a smart-ass bomb...

Kevin So followed in awhile, with another excellent performance of individual, and he was followed by someone doing (let's see if i can get the name right)

I drank too much tequila,...
& O Lord I feela...
a real bad song comin on.....

I made the circuit of cuisine, nashville (caught another wonderful richard berman tune) , coho, and then decided to leave my chair and knapsack, and just wander... I stumbled into an unnamed camp with an anniversary party going on... Buddy Mondlock, Nickie Lehman doing "There's no shoe my mouth won't fit" with accompanmeet of the Nickie-ettes, michael mcnevin, and other unindicted co-conspiritors. just a wonderful evening..

to sleep early... men and women partnership conference tomorrow..
